What sensory concepts relate to homework? Movement and hydration. Vision. Hearing. These senses may be considered before, during, and between study sessions. This post will explain how these senses are related to homework success.
#1 – Movement and Hydration
A. Physical Exercise for Homework Success
To begin with, your top priority for homework success is to exercise before homework. Exercise increases oxygen to your brain and produces endorphins, the “feel good” chemical your body makes. This beautiful mix increases your response time. This means that speed and accuracy in completing homework will increase. Who doesn’t want that?

Furthermore, such exercise may include after-school sports programs, a personal exercise routine such as jogging, or other preferred exercise. Outdoor exercise is the best.
In addition, short exercises should be done during study breaks. Activities may include jump rope, basketball, short jog, or other similar activity.
B. The Level of Your Workspace
Also, change the level of your workspace. When you notice that you are beginning to lose concentration, change from a sitting position to standing. For example, you may place your work on a counter, dresser, or taller object. Or, place your homework on a clipboard and put the clipboard on the wall. Office supply stores may also provide writing surfaces that can be elevated or lowered.

C. Hydration for Homework Success
Likewise, water intake is as important as exercise. Hydration and exercise are also interrelated from a physical and mental perspective. Is dehydration a physical, sensory sensation? Yes. The first sensation we may experience is a dry mouth.
Therefore, before you begin your homework, fill a drinking bottle with ice-cold water. When you get stuck on a problem, drink water. If you have finished a set of problems, drink water. After you finish your homework, drink more water in celebration! Drinking water helps you “flow” from one problem to the next more efficiently!

#2 – Vision
In addition, good lighting is important. Find the type of lighting that works best for you. Experiment with different kinds of light bulbs. My favorite is natural light such as the sunlight streaming through a window to my desk.
Furthermore, consider the visual distractions around you. Should this be a challenge, try this. Place a lamp on your desk. Turn the lamp on. Next, turn off any other lights. This will decrease your view of those items that may distract you. Now position the lamp to light your work space. This helps keep your vision and mind focused in one place.

#3 – Hearing
Likewise, consider any sound that may be distracting. For example, the television down the hall, your siblings in the room next door, and the washing machine across the hall. For these types of sounds, you may use noise-cancelling headphones. Simple earplugs may also serve the purpose and be less expensive. A fan may also mute noises. This may be purchased at second-hand stores at a reduced price.
In addition, consider listening to music that helps you focus. If you have not tried this, try out music by classical musicians, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn. Explore other genres to determine what works best for you.

#4 – Need a Break? No Problem
Also, just as completing your homework is important, I recommend you take a short break when you feel like your brain is slowing down. Another good time is when you experience frustration with a particular problem. Let’s consider different types of breaks.
First: As mentioned earlier, exercise is a wonderful choice! It could also include a chore such as taking out the trash, playing with the family dog, or pulling a few weeds in a garden.

Second: Choose a healthy, chewy, crunchy snack. Nothing is better than chomping down on celery to release stress and tension. (Don’t bite your tongue)! Other healthy choices: fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, crunchy cereals, and multigrain bread toasted, topped with crunchy peanut butter.

Third: Brush your hair. Brush your teeth. These activities may help provide a sensation to help you wake up. Brushing your hair may also help you feel calmer, and decrease feelings of homework stress. Brushing your teeth will give you that sense of minty freshness. I have also heard that some people report the smell of mint gives them a sense of alertness.
Fourth: Consider temperature. Splash your face with cold water or take a quick cold shower. Take a short walk on a cold, day. Make sure the room temperature is comfortable. If it is too warm and humid, it will make you sleepy.

Conclusion
In conclusion, when your sensory needs are met, you will experience homework success!
