The humble pencil is overlooked due to its simplicity. However, let’s highlight some of its great features, including math and beyond.
#1 – Pointed Reflection
It is autumn. The air is cool and crisp. The red, yellow, and brown leaves elegantly dance dreamily to the ground. Pumpkin muffins and a hot drink soothe my soul. Time seems to stop as I stare at my outline for this post and reflect on pencils in math and beyond.

#2 – Pencil Happiness

First, let’s consider the beauty of the pencil.
- 1. Unlike markers and highlighters, the pencil is forgiving.
- 2. Unlike markers and highlighters, pencils do not dry out.
- 3. Like markers and highlighters, pencils come in different colors.
- 4. Colored pencils are useful for color-coding notes
- 5. Geometry Applications: Make a compass out of pencils. See below.
#3 – Pencil Sharpening
In addition, pencil sharpening is one of my favorite “classroom office” jobs. Unless there is a student who excels in this task, I derive much joy in sharpening pencils. I hold the pencil just right and push it just to the point of action, waiting for the feel of a finished point. Colored pencils tend to be brittle, requiring less of a point.
Furthermore, there comes a point at which pencils become too short for older students. Do not throw these pencils away. Give them to teachers and occupational therapists working with students from Pre-K to 2nd, for students with smaller hands.
#4 – Pencil Shavings

Likewise, pencil shavings do serve various purposes. See below.
- 1. Repels moths
- 2. Breaks down materials in compost for soil
- 3. Added to potpourri mixes
- 4. Included in art designs
- 5. Used as kindling to start fires
Conclusion
In conclusion, may your perception of a pencil see new possibilities in all its forms; pencils in math and beyond.
