Are you looking for a successful way to teach word problems? Maybe you are exhausted from the countless times you have repeated instruction over the past week. You provided keywords, examples, and practice problems. Yet, students continue to appear baffled beyond words, yes, words. Keep reading to discover a different activity strategy for Pre-Algebra word problems.

#1 – What a Pre-Algebra Word Problem Activity Looks Like

A. Pre-Algebra Word Problem Happiness

First, imagine you enter your classroom, energized and excited! Students can feel your excitement. They may even wonder what happened to you. As you lean back in your chair with satisfaction, you gather instructions and other supplemental materials to hand out for pre-algebra word problems.

B. Organize Small Groups for Pre-Algebra Word Problems

Next, begin by organizing students in small groups.

  • 1. Go to the back of the room, if you prefer math homework over writing a story.
    2. Go to the front of the room if you like to draw.
    3. Remain seated if you like to read and write stories.

Now you will instruct students to form small groups. State that each small group must have at least one person in their group who likes math. There must also be at least one person who likes to draw and another who likes to read and write stories.

C. Provide and Recommend Resources

Next, provide students with the following:
1. Keyword lists for word problems
2. Math expressions or equations such as 2x + 3 = 15.
3. Encourage students to use example problems provided in their notes or math text to help stimulate ideas for their creation.

D. Provide Instructions

Finally, instruct students to write a word problem based on the math expression or equation given. Explain that the final product must include a story, drawn illustration and correspond with the expression or equation. Add that stories written using different keywords for the same problem will result in an extra credit point.

#2 – Follow-Up

Next, during the following day of class, each group takes a turn to present their math expression/equation to the whole class. The students will include the math expression/equation, a picture, and story. Between each presenting group, praise the group for accurate connections. Also, make recommendations for solving similar problems in the future.

Before the end of class, create new math expressions and equations for the next day, differentiating between the skill level of each small group. For example, a small group that is struggling may need simple expressions such as “x + 3”. Another group may be able to solve a large equation such as: 2x + 8x + (4 – x) = 10.

#3 – Expressions

Furthermore, let’s look at an example with the expression, 10x – 4.

Pre-Algebra Word Problems: A story to correlate with the expression, 10x - 5

In addition, anticipate that the degree of detail and types of possible pictures and stories may vary from one group to another.

#4 – Equations

See the example below. This is just one of many possible ways to describe this math equation: x + (2x) + (2x + 5) = 180.

 Example of an equation, x + 2x + 2x + 5 = 180

Conclusion

In conclusion, students will discover greater confidence with word problems by using the reverse strategy method. This is an awesome win for you and your students! Have fun!
